160 For 60: Week 1
The countdown to Staples soccer’s 60th anniversary has begun.
As promised, each day we post a new fun fact about Wrecker history — teams, players, coaches, whatever — on social media.
Here are the first 6, from last week:
- Staples’ 1st game ever (September 23, 1958) was a 3-2 loss to Andrew Warde. Four days later, the Wreckers shut out Roger Ludlowe 4-0 for their 1st-ever win.
- Mark Noonan ’83 and Mike Clifford ’85 were members of Duke University’s 1st national championship in any sport, even before basketball: the 1986 men’s soccer team.
- Staples’ 5 straight state championships (1969-73) is a Connecticut soccer record.
- In 70 games, Staples has lost just 3 times to New Canaan. The Wreckers’ lifetime record against the Rams is 52-3-15.
- Three sets of 4 brothers have played Staples soccer: the Murphys, Hobermans and McNairs.
- The 2000 team was undefeated and untied in the regular season — the first year Staples played a 16-game FCIAC schedule.
