0Norwalk Bears In Quarantine; Monday’s Match Postponed
On Wednesday, Staples beat Norwalk 2-1 at Testa Field — a very tough field to win at.
On Thursday, the Wreckers trained in a cold, driving rain. Despite the weather, they had a blast.
Friday’s session was intense, productive and fun (as well as cold).
When it was over, head coach Dan Woog checked his phone. A text from athletic director Marty Lisevick said that Monday’s rematch at Loeffler Field — the last regular season game, of this very irregular season — was off. The city of Norwalk has seen a spike in coronavirus cases, and the Norwalk High varsity is in quarantine.
Earlier on Friday, the reserve match was canceled for the same reason. As of Friday night, the freshman game (Saturday, 11 a.m., Nathan Hale Middle School) was still on.
“Our players reacted very maturely when they heard the news,” says Woog. “They’ve been very understanding, and flexible, all year.”
Before Wednesday’s match, assistant coach Kurt Dasbach spoke emotionally about the possibility that it would be the last game. Several players asked if the coaches were hiding news from the team.
They were not. But the possibility of a sudden suspension — or end — to the already-shortened season had loomed over everyone’s heads since pre-season training (in cohorts of 10, with no contact) began in August.
“Our guys have been through a lot, physically and emotionally,” Woog notes. “They’ve been grateful for every opportunity to play and train. Of course, we’re thinking of our friends at Norwalk, and wishing them well.”
As of Friday evening, the post-season playoffs were still on. With Norwalk out, it may be a 5-team affair. Brien McMahon seems to be back after their own quarantine. Wilton, Danbury and Ridgefield round out the field.
Pairings, sites and times should be announced Monday. Playoff games are scheduled to begin Wednesday, November 4.
Though — like everything else in this COVID season — that is subject to change.
