Match Report: Staples vs. Fairfield Ludlowe
Someone who has seen Fairfield Ludlowe play often this fall said they have “underperformed.”
But the Falcons — who brought a 3-5-2 record into tonight’s’ Taft Field Match — performed well against 8-0-2 Staples.
They scored two first half goals, then continued to disrupt the Wreckers’ rhythm throughout the rest of the match. The 2-0 loss was the league leaders’ first of the season.
The first goal — in the 10th minute, on a quick finish after the defense was caught flat — marked the first time the blue-and-whites were behind all year. The second score came 5 minutes before halftime, when a ball over the top was run on to nicely.
Staples keeper Nick Sikorski and his Ludlowe counterpart Nick Parent had busy days. Both were confident on hard, low balls, and punching crosses away in traffic.
The second half saw the Wreckers stymied by a Ludlowe defense that frequently banged the ball forward. Neither side strung together more than 3 or 4 passes — frustrating for the Westporters, who rely on possession to find seams and exploit openings.
It was Staples’ most disconnected match of the season, which is almost 3/4 done. That comes Thursday, when the Wreckers host Harding (4 p.m., Wakeman Field). The Presidents are not in the FCIAC; it’s Staples one out-of-conference match, and counts only for state tournament seedings. FINAL SCORE: Fairfield Ludlowe 2, Staples 0. SEASON RECORD: 8-1-2.

Luca Caniato and Wilson Daniels report: The junior varsity edged Fairfield Ludlowe 1-0. The goal came late from Karsten Langone, who fired a shot, following a great pass into the box by Adrian Rodriguez off a feed from Greyson Downes. When it was bobbled by the keeper, Langone followed up and tapped in the game-winner. Adriano Carpi commanded the team with leadership and grit.
The freshmen shut out Fairfield Ludlowe 3-0. Ryan Allen headed in an Andrew Xu corner. Owen Green then finished off a beautiful long ball from Noah Rossoni. The final tally was a Sam Burmeister put-back. The Wreckers outshot the Falcons 28-0. Lucas Alarcon-Frias and Arthur Khisyamov had dangerous sideline runs, while Xu performed strongly in his first game up top.
