2’93 State Champs Reunite
Nearly every senior on the 1993 state championship team — and several underclassmen — took to the field again Saturday, as part of Staples High School’s Class of ’94 reunion.
From as far as Denver, Las Vegas and California, they gathered at Wakeman for a morning short-goal game.
Wakeman did not exist when the Wreckers stunned Danbury in overtime in the state semis, then cruised to a 3-1 victory over E.O. Smith-Storrs in the final. Back in the mid-90s, the site was woods. What is now Bedford Middle School was an abandoned Nike missile site.
But the champs — now well into successful careers, and with children — picked up right where they left off. They were joined on the field by 3 fitter players: rising seniors Cormac Mulvey, Will Murray and Sam Rossoni. The current Wreckers got a glimpse of the joy they’ll feel when they get together in 2054 — hopefully, with their own state title.
A few wives, siblings and parents watched from the stands.
The ’93 team then headed to Chris O’Dell’s house. The current freshman coach — a junior, and starting defender, on that state championship squad — hosted everyone for lunch, swimming, and the swapping of tales.
They were joined by Jeff Lea — their former head coach — and Dan Woog, the future head coach who had coached many of them on freshman and junior varsity teams.
