2024 Wreckers Honored At Banquet

Plaques, certificates, speeches, slideshows — and many, many thanks — were all part of last night’s annual banquet, at the Norwalk Inn.

The coaching staff, and master of ceremonies/former head coach Dan Woog honored the 16 graduating seniors, along with the entire varsity, junior varsity and freshman teams. Kudos were given to the Wreckers’ many supporters, especially the players’ parents.

Cormac Mulvey earned the Block “S” as Most Valuable Player, in a vote by teammates. The senior defender was cited for his quiet leadership on and off the field. A dominant force in back and going forward — and unbeatable in the air — he epitomized what it means to be a Staples soccer captain.

Aaron Varsov received the other Block “S,” as Most Improved. He was “a total team player, with an infectious personality.” A JV athlete last year, he earned more and more time as the year went on. By seaon’s end he was a starter, or the first player off the bench.

Two Coach’s Awards were given, as well. Senior Perrin Root was praised for overcoming an injury, offering tough play, support and a calming influence. Junior Drew Hill was “the first person you’d choose to go into battle with,” for his quiet but very effective work.

Hill received another honor: #15. Mulvey handed down the prestigious jersey — a tribute to Preston Hirten ’07, a dynamic player who died of a heart condition during preseason training at the University of Mary Washington — to the midfield stalwart.

Mulvey was named to the All-FCIAC first team. Zach Gorin and Will Murray earned All-Western Division honors.

Thomas Pretty won the JV Most Valuable Player award. Eli Zev won the Stephen Martin Award, given to a freshman player for his dedication and positive attitude.
