Staples vs. Bunnell (Pre-Season Scrimmage)

After weather-related cancellations with Newtown and Glastonbury, the Wreckers got only their 2nd taste of competition today at Wakeman.

Bunnell — Class L finalists last year, with every starter returning, and ranked #29 in the nation in the pre-season NSCAA poll — proved a worthy opponent.  The Bulldogs feature several South Central Academy players, and they play a crisp-passing, fast-moving game.  They’re well organized, tough, and seem certain to contend for the L state title again.

Staples struck 1st.  Steve Smith sent Jake Malowitz forward, into the corner.  His cross created havoc in the goal mouth, before being knocked in for an own goal.

The visitors drew even off a defensive lapse, then went ahead 15 seconds before halftime on an arcing 35-yard shot into the far corner, after the ball was played out following a free kick.

Staples made it 2-2 midway through a very exciting 2nd half.  Jay Kaplan won a loose ball and hammered home.

Goalkeeper Tucker Rizzi had a very solid outing, in his varsity debut.

“This was an important match for us,” said head coach Dan Woog.  “Our defense was tested against a talented team.  We had to organize quickly on transitions, on both sides of the ball.  We saw what we need to work on too.

“It was a tremendous opportunity for us.  We thank Bunnell for coming over, and wish them great luck this season.”
