Charlie Reiter ’06 Voted Southern Conference Player Of The Year

After leading the conference and ranking among the nation’s best in scoring, Davidson College senior Charlie Reiter was named the Southern Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Year.  The honor came in a vote by the league’s coaches.  Charlie was also chosen for the all-conference 1st team.

Charlie helped lead the Wildcats to an 11-7 record, and their 1st national ranking (Number 21 by Soccer America) since 2005. This year, they beat 2 nationally ranked opponents.

“We are thrilled for Charlie,” said head coach Matt Spear. “It’s great the other SoCon coaches recognized and highlighted his awesome impact this season.”

Charlie enjoyed a breakout season this fall, after moving up to forward from the midfield.  Registering 12 goals and 8 assists after starting all 18 matches, he was a national leader on offense.  He ranks 13th in goals per game (0.67) and 29th in assists per game (0.44).  His scoring total is the best single-season mark for a Davidson player since 2001.

Charlie played in every match in his Davidson career.  He started 48 of 77 games.

“His stats were prolific, and a major factor why we doubled our total goals and almost tripled our wins from the previous 2008 season,” said Spear.

Charlie’s 2009 season included many highlights. He was named the Southern Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week for all games played Sept. 29-Oct. 5 after tallying 2 goals and one assist in wins over College of Charleston and Georgia Southern.  He also scored in Davidson’s 4-1 win over then-Number 6 Duke.  In a 9-game scoring streak he scored 7 goals and added 7 assists.  He finished the year with 4 game-winning goals. In his final college game, Charlie had a career-best 3 goals and 1 assist to lead Davidson to a 5-2 win over Atlantic Sun conference regular season champion Campbell.

Charlie has been equally successful in the classroom.  He was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team last month, and is a candidate for the Academic All-America team.  Majoring in political science with a 3.48 GPA, Charlie is a 2-time SoCon Academic Honor Roll selection, a member of the Davidson Scholars program.

“Charlie is very smart, very competitive, very focused and very talented – those ingredients are duly celebrated by this honor,” said Spear.
