3Jim Bacharach ’72, Jim Manning ’74 Enter Union College Hall Of Fame
The 1975 Union College men’s soccer team was inducted into the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame last weekend. Two former Wreckers — Jim Bacharach ’72 and Jim Manning ’74 — were on that legendary Dutchmen side.
The join another Staples soccer alum — Guy Claveloux ’83 — who is already in the Hall.
Bacharach and Manning — both FCIAC and state championship winners — were starters on Union’s ’75 team that went 12-2. The squad set a number of program records. A few still stand, nearly 45 years later:
Best winning percentage: .857
Most wins in a row: 9
Highest average goals per game: 3.86
Average margin of victory: 2.55 goals.
The team finished #9 in the regional rankings. They were the only NCAA Division III team, at a time when rankings included D-I, II and III schools together.
Back in 1975, Union was a member of NESCAC. The league did not allow teams to participate in NCAA tournaments. Two teams the Dutchmen had beaten received bids.
Union was allowed to participate in the regional ECAC tournament. They won the final decisively: 8-0.
Congratulations to Jim and Jim. Staples — which has sent a dozen players to Schenectady — is proud of our long connection with Union College soccer!
