Obituary: Matt McGuire ’74

Matt McGuire ’73 — a member of Staples’ 1973 state championship team — died March 26 at his Wilton home. He was 61.

Born in Wilmington, Delaware, the son of the late George and Dorothy McGuire, he was raised in Westport and lived in Ridgefield and Wilton. After Staples, he played soccer at Boston College.

Matt coached Little League baseball and youth soccer. He loved horseback riding, spending time at the beach, sailing, reading, playing paddle tennis with his buddies at Longshore and traveling, but above all else, Matthew loved spending time with his love, Mary Ellen.

Survivors in addition to his wife Mary Ellen include 4 siblings: Mark McGuire (a former state champion soccer player as well) and his wife Debbie of Florida; Giselle Hauser and her husband Robert of Fairfield, Megan McGuire of Boston, and Ann Wortman and her husband John of Groton, Massachusetts, plus several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at a later date.

Matt loved animals of all kinds. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the ROAR Donofrio Animal Shelter, 45 South Street, Ridgefield, CT 06877. For information or to offer an online condolence please visit www.SpearMillerFuneralHome.com.
