Pre-Season Camp Planned For Incoming Freshmen

For several years, incoming freshmen have asked for an opportunity to get ready for soccer tryouts before entering Staples.

In August, they’ll get that chance.

Brian Kuk — who for 10 years has directed Staples’ very successful pre-season camp for current players and varsity candidates — will add a camp for rising 9th graders only.

There will be double sessions in Westport from Saturday, August 10 through Tuesday, August 13, at the Wakeman turf field. The camp will include technical work, strategy and fitness. Registration information will be available this spring.

The STA camp for rising sophomores, juniors and seniors who consider themselves varsity candidates will follow, from August 15 through 20. Tryouts for all grades begin Saturday, August 24.

“Staples soccer and STA have a strong and important partnership,” said Staples head coach Dan Woog. “For a decade, our guys have looked forward to our pre-season camp. It’s hard work, but it’s also fun. It’s great that Brian Kuk and Brian Chandler will bring their special magic to freshmen too.”

At the Staples soccer banquet earlier this month, STA’s Brian Kuk and Brian Chandler received the 2012 Jeff Lea Award. Named for the previous Wrecker head coach, it honors adults for “long and meritorious service” to Staples soccer.

Woog stressed that — as with the returnees’ camp — the freshman offering is not mandatory. “I know plenty of people have a variety of summer plans,” he said. “This is just one more opportunity to get ready for the season, for whoever is around. We’ve gotten a lot of requests for something like this, so we’re excited to offer it.”
