Tim Caffrey ’94 Spurs Tottenham On In Denver
Back in 1993, when Tim Caffrey ’94 was captain of Staples’ state championship team, it took work to follow English soccer.
Today — thanks to Kyle Martino ’99, NBC Sports, the internet and globalization — it’s a lot easier.
Still, Caffrey — a longtime Tottenham Hotspur fan — never expected he’d see his favorite team play in the US.
But soccer is a funny — and great — game.
Now Caffrey is in the middle of one of the biggest matches of the summer. He leads the Spurs’ supporters club in Denver. On July 29, they’ll face the MLS All-Stars at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, in Colorado.
“We have many supporters who grew up in London,” Caffrey told the Denver Post. “They’re kind of in shock.”
Tottenham’s ties to MLS include MVP Robbie Keane, the Seattle Sounders’ Clint Dempsey, and — now playing in the Barclays Premier League — former Sounder DeAndre Yedlin.
Caffrey noted that Kroenke Sports & Entertainment owns Spurs’ cross-London rival Arsenal, as well as the Colorado Rapids. That makes the July match especially sweet for Caffrey and the rest of his Colorado Spurs group.
