Wreckers Open State Tournament Friday At NFA

For only the 2nd time ever — the 1st was a 7-0 victory to open the 1992 state tournament — Staples faces Norwich Free Academy.

The match was postponed a day by a nor’easter/snowstorm. It is rescheduled for Friday, Nov. 9, (2 p.m., Fontaine Field — off the NFA campus) as the Wreckers’ 1st state tournament match of 2012.

Staples and Xavier finished dead even — with 10-4-2 regular season records — in the CIAC class “LL” (extra large schools) tournament bracket. A computer-generated tie-breaker made the Westporters #17, and the upstaters 18.

That means the Wreckers travel to Norwich — north of New London — for their 1st LL match. NFA — an ECC powerhouse — is often #1 or 2 in the tournament seedings. This year, they are #16 (9-3-2).

The match is scheduled for 2 p.m., at NFA.

The state tournament was originally slated to begin on Monday. Because many schools were out last week in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, 1st-round games were pushed back 3 days.

“We always say we’ll play anyone anywhere, any time,” Staples head coach Dan Woog said.

“Our guys are psyched. Their goal is the same as always: win the last game of the year. After 13 days off, we can’t wait to get back in action.”

QUICK KICKS:  Due to last week’s weather, the FCIAC delayed its semifinal matches to yesterday. League officials decided beforehand that the 2 winners would be declared co-champions. Congratulations to Norwalk (5-1 victors over Wilton) and Ridgefield (2-0 over Greenwich)….

Farmington — which last year knocked out Staples in the LL 2nd round — competes in Class “L” this year.
