Brad Tursi ’97 Earns Country Record Gold

In 1996, Brad Tursi starred on one of Staples’ best teams ever. But the Wreckers fell in overtime to Guilford in the state finals — their only loss in a 19-1-2 season.

Nearly 20 years later, Tursi finally can say he’s Number One.

Of course, it’s in a different field. He co-wrote “A Guy Walks Into a Bar,” which singer Tyler Farr took to the country music top spot last month. It’s been certified gold by the Record Industry Association of America too.

Tursi lives in Nashville. His songs have been recorded by Kenny Chesney and many others.

In addition to being a songwriter, Tursi is lead guitar player and co-writer for Old Dominion, which opened for Chesney’s 2015 tour.

Tursi says, “When I was younger I always made fun of my dad for listening to country music. Now I’m writing it. Who ever knew he was so cool? There’s gotta be a song in there somewhere.”
