Scrimmage Report: Staples vs. Joel Barlow

The Wreckers had such a good scrimmage with Joel Barlow last November, they made sure to schedule them again this August.

The SWC powerhouse is always skillful and well coached. They knock the ball around cleanly, quickly and with purpose. They’re a good test for Staples — and they’re right up the road.

This pre-season encounter continued where last year’s post-season tuneup left off. The 2 sides matched up well. The blue-and-whites’ coaches saw what they needed to, in terms of strengths and weaknesses.

Timmy Liles corraled Matt Engler’s feed, and rocketed a curving, 35-yard shot for a 1st half lead.

Barlow equalized a minute before halftime, off a defensive giveaway. They scored again on a close-in blast, following a corner kick.

The Wreckers are now midway through the pre-season. They’re in action on Saturday, at the Wethersfield jamboree, and Monday, for a Labor Day match against perennial New York City standout Martin Luther King in the city, at Asphalt Green.
