Kevin Murphy ’77 Inducted Into Connecticut Soccer Hall Of Fame

Kevin Murphy ’77 earned the ultimate Connecticut soccer honor Saturday night: induction into the Connecticut Soccer Hall of Fame. The event — which included appearances by US Soccer president Sunil Gulati (a charter Hall member in 1999) and US Soccer presidential candidate Kyle Martino ’99 (a 2011 inductee) — was held at the Cromwell Radisson.

At Staples, Murphy was a 2-time All-State and 1-time All-New England player. At the University of Rhode Island, he helped the Rams capture the NEISL, Yankee Conference and New England championships, and earn 2 NCAA national tournament berths. He was team captain and MVP, and earned All-New England honors all 4 years. In 1980 he was named to the All-America 1st team.

Murphy was drafted by the NASL Detroit Express and MISL Chicago Horizons. He was on the Express team that finished 2nd in 1981.

He was inducted into the University of Rhode Island Soccer Hall of Fame in 1996, and the New England Soccer Hall of Fame in 2011.

Murphy is the 11th honoree with Staples soccer connections, and the 2nd Murphy: His brother Ken was inducted 2 years ago. Besides the Murphys and Martino, the others include Albie Loeffler (charter member, 1999), Dan Woog (2000), Jim Kuhlmann (2003), Tim and Paul Hunter (2004), Mark Noonan (2010), Mike Noonan (2011) and Steve Baumann (2016).
