Taylor McNair, Aaron Liu, Kyle Hoberman, Max Hoberman Honored At Scholar-Athlete Dinner

Taylor McNair — the boys soccer honoree — could not be at tonight’s Scholar-Athlete dinner at Continental Manor; he was playing in the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association state cup final (his Beachside team won).

But several of Taylor’s Staples soccer teammates were in the spotlight, receiving major scholarships and earning major applause.

Aaron Liu and Stephan Patterson both received $10,000 Coleman Brothers Foundation grants. Distributed by the Westport Soccer Association, the awards honor Scott and Keith Coleman, former Staples soccer player and wrestler respectively, who were killed in the World Trade Center on 9/11.

Aaron — a varsity defender — is a longtime player and referee with the WSA. Former Staples player Stephan also played WSA soccer and is a tremendous volunteer in town activities.

Todd Coleman ’84, Mary Jane Liu, Aaron Liu, Jeanne Coleman and Neil Coleman pose after Aaron received a $10,000 Coleman Brothers Foundation grant at tonight’s Scholar-Athlete banquet.

Both Aaron (ice hockey) and Stephan (wrestling) were at the head table tonight, as Scholar-Athlete honorees in their respective sport. Aaron will attend Colby College, while Stephan is headed to the University of Pittsburgh.

Kyle Hoberman and Max Hoberman — varsity soccer players and stars on the multi-champion indoor and outdoor track teams — each received $3,333.33 scholarships from the Laddie Lawrence Fund. Kyle is going to Syracuse University, Max to Emory University.

Another soccer-related award was presented. The Albie Loeffler Scholarship — to an athlete who competed in a sport that the founder of the Staples soccer program coached (soccer, basketball, baseball, track) — went to girls soccer player Colleen McCarthy. The honor is significant, because her father — Stuart McCarthy ’79 — played for Mr. Loeffler.
